Erasing & Minimizing the Appearance of Scars

Scar tissue is biologically different from normal skin, which is why scars can remain red, raised, or uneven long after healing. Whether caused by surgery, injury, or acne, Miami Skin Institute offers a modern, non-surgical approach to improve both the color and texture of scars.

Dr. Jegasothy has pioneered a protocol combining VBeam® and Fraxel® lasers for more effective, comprehensive results in minimizing the appearance of scars. VBeam® works by targeting the red color in hemoglobin, helping close the blood vessels that feed the scar, significantly reducing redness and discoloration. This is especially important because scars are often overly vascularized, with more blood vessels than healthy skin. Fraxel® uses fractional laser technology to create thousands of microscopic treatment zones within the scar tissue. These tiny zones stimulate normal fibroblasts to produce healthy collagen, gradually replacing scar tissue with new, “normal” tissue over time.

Together, these treatments address both key components of scars—color and texture—helping them soften, smooth, and blend more naturally with surrounding skin without the need for surgery.

Treatments can begin a few weeks after the skin wound has healed and are spaced four to six weeks apart. At the Miami Skin Institute, each treatment is customized to each individual patient and scar, at every visit. Dr. Jegasothy uses  proprietary laser protocols – adjusted at each visit based on the type and appearance of the scar – to ensure optimal results with minimal recovery time and a quick return to normal activities. Sun protection is recommended following treatment. Over 2–3 months, as new collagen is produced, scars gradually improve in texture and tone, becoming softer, smoother, and more even for a natural, balanced result.

Cosmetic Hyfrecation

Small bumps on the skin—such as skin tags, milia, sebaceous hyperplasia, seborrheic keratoses, and cherry angiomas— can create unwanted texture, contributing to a rough or uneven appearance that does not resolve on its own.

At Miami Skin Institute, cosmetic hyfrecation is a precise treatment that uses a fine electrical current to safely remove these benign growths. The current gently dehydrates the tissue, removing unwanted growths while preserving surrounding skin, helping minimize the risk of scarring or discoloration and delivering natural-looking results.

When treating skin growths, many bumps or lesions can appear similar to the untrained eye, and what looks harmless may still require medical attention. At Miami Skin Institute, Dr. Jegasothy evaluates each lesion prior to treatment to ensure it is safe and appropriate to remove and to rule out any underlying concerns.

The procedure is quick, comfortable, and requires minimal aftercare. Most patients experience only slight, temporary redness and can return to their normal activities immediately. We provide a proprietary skin-healing cream to minimize recovery time and prevent superficial infection, then we provide a prescription-strength cortisone ointment to resolve any post-procedure redness in week 2 after the procedure. Patients are completely healed by week 3, and it seems as if the growth was never there!

Cosmetic hyfrecation at Miami Skin Institute provides patients with peace of mind as well as aesthetic refinement. Once the bumps are removed, the skin appears smoother and more even. It offers a subtle but meaningful improvement in how light reflects off the skin, how makeup applies, and how the skin looks up close – enhancing your natural beauty!
