Going Vegan May Be Good For Your Skin!

Have you ever had acne and thought about going vegan? Maybe it’s time to finally give it a try, or at least cut down on your intake of meat and dairy. In Allure’s November issue, Dr. Jegasothy gave some insightful information to Meirav Devash:

“The rates of hormonal acne I see have gone up so much,” Dr. Jegasothy said. “It’s all coming from the hormones that the animals we eat are being fed.”
However, simply being a vegetarian may not be enough! All the dairy we consume is made with milk and this milk is intended to help a baby cow or goat grow. That means that whatever product made with milk is going to be loaded with the nutrients and hormones that will cause you to break out.

So if you’ve been toying with the idea of becoming vegan, go ahead and give it a try. Your skin may thank you for it.

Your Hands are Supposed to Tell Your Future-Not Your Age

What are the parts of your body that get the most sun exposure? Hint: they are grabbing your steering wheel, bathing in the sun. As Dr. Jegasothy says, hands are the fastest agers. They have the least amount of subcutaneous fat (the stuff that makes gives the plump, youthful look). Using SPF on your hands will protect them from wrinkles, brown spots, and fine lines. Although it is “ideal if you started using sunscreen on your hands daily from when you’re a young adult or a middle teen”, it is never too late to start protecting your hands now.

Rosie Naraski from Totalbeauty suggests to use a hand cream that has sunscreen. Not only are you protecting your hands against dryness, but from damage caused by the sun. There are inexpensive drugstore options so that you can stash it in your purse, desk, gym bag, or wherever you frequent for all day use and protection.

Attack Acne with More than One Weapon

There is not one cause for acne, so why fight the breakout war with one strategy? Acne is a widespread condition, as Leisa Goins from WebMD explains. There are many types of breakouts, such as blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, and cysts. It is recommended to use salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide at night, and adapalene or another retinoid in the morning. Using these in combination will treat all breakouts and avoid antibiotic resistance.

However, the most important weapon is utilizing your dermatologist. Dermatologists have inside knowledge about acne and access to the newest and most innovative treatments. For example, Dr. Jegasothy offers laser treatments to reduce inflammation and medical peels to unclog pores and reduce oil production. These treatments can be used alongside previously mentioned treatments. Dr. Jegasothy states “a real breakthrough in acne therapy is aldactone, which impacts hormones to reduce menstrual-related breakouts”. She also suggests using probiotic cleansers to balance the effects of taking these antibiotics.

The Dirty Truth About Mud Masks

Mud masks are all the rage, and have been for quite some time. Turns out, there’s a reason for that! In this article by Erika Stalder for Refinery29, Dr. Jegasothy points out why mud masks are a skin care staple. “Sulfur, as long as the user is not allergic to it, reduces redness and inflammation in all skin types,” Dr. Jegasothy says. Other minerals in mud, like selenium and zinc, also help and have similar benefits.
